1. Why do I continute to get an "Error 404" page?

We have recently redesigned the web site and the page you are trying to access may have been moved or renamed. Please make sure that you update all of your bookmarks or links. It is also important that you clear out your web browser's cache so that the new page information can load. Instructions on how to do this can be found at item 7. If you are unsure of a page's location, try starting from the USAC main page. If you are sure that the location of the page you are trying to access is correct, but still cannot access it, please visit "Get Help".

2. Why am I unable to edit PDF forms on-line?

Not all of our Adobe PDF documents were created with form functionality. We are in the process of revising our forms so that they will all be in an editable format on-line. Be sure to visit the main page for updates made to this web site.

3. Why am I unable to download forms in PDF format?

In order to download PDF files from your internet browser, you must use "right mouse click" on the file you wish to obtain . You will then see a menu with an option that may say "Save as...", "Save location" or "Save Link". Choose this option by "left mouse clicking" on the link, and save the file to your computer (either a disk or your harddrive).

For Mac users, hold down the clicker on your mouse until a list of menu options appears. From this menu option, choose the "Save to..." option, and save the file to your computer (either a disk or your harddrive).

4. Why does my machine freeze when I try to print?

There are at least three possible reasons as to why your machine is locking up. Try the solutions set forth first, and if you are still experiencing problems visit the "Get Help" section of the USAC web site.

First check the amount of harddrive space you have available for your C:\ drive. You can check this by going into "Windows Explorer" or "My Computer", right mouse click on the C:\ and left click on "Properties". You should have at least 60 Megabytes available to run any application safely. If you are low on disk space, try clearing out your browser cache. For instructions on how to do this, please reference item 7.

Second, memory settings may be responsible and you should contact your system administrator to make any necessary modifications.

Third, if you are using a network printer that is shared with other users, check to see that your printer queue is not overloaded with other pending print requests. For Windows 95/98/2000 users, press the Start button located in your toolbar, Settings, Control Panel. Double click on the "Printers" icon. You may see more than one printer icon, the icon with a checkmark next to a printer will be your default printer. This printer should not be grayed out. If it is grayed out, try rebooting your machine or contact your system administrator.

6. Why do I need to clear my web browser's cache?

While surfing the internet, your browser stores every file, image and program associated with the web sites you visit. This is done so that the next time you visit that site you will not have to re-download those files. This decreases the amount of time spent waiting for a site to download. If you do not periodically clear out your browser's cache you may be reloading an old page with outdated information. It is also advisable that you clear out your browsers cache so that do not use up your hard drive space. By not removing these stored files, you may see your machine's performance decrease over time. Remember the files you download maintain the same file size as on the web site. For example, you visit a web site that has an image located on the page that is 25 Kb. Once that picture appears to you in your web browser you now have that same image on your machine. Now if that same site had 10 images that where 25 Kb then you have just used 250 Kb to store those images.

7. How do I clear out my browsers cache?

Because there are so many different browsers and versions of browsers we will only demonstrate one general example of the two most common internet browsers. Most browsers have similar tools, so if your browser or version is not covered try looking within your browser settings for, Properties, Configuration, Settings. There should be a section for Browser Cache. Also, try the help files of your browser.

For Internet Exporer 5:

On the top toolbar of go to "Tools" and then "Internet Options". There will be a series of tabs at the top of the pop-up window. Under the "General" tab, middle section, there is a section called "Temporary Internet Files". Click on the button "Delete Files". This may take a few minutes, depending on how many files you have stored.

For Netscape 4.7:

On the top toolbar of go to "Edit" and then "Preferences". In the "Category" section click on "Advanced" on the left hand side of the window. Next click on the "Cache" button. There will be two buttons "Clear Memory Cache" and "Clear Disk Cache". Clear Disk Cache is what you want to perform but it is advisable that you also Clear Memory Cache for ultimate system performance.

9. Why do I see "gibberish" when I click on the links to PDF files?

Your browser is not configured to automatically open PDF files. You must save these files to your hard drive first, making note of the location that you save the file to. Once the entire file has downloaded you can then manually open the file using Adobe Acrobat Reader.
